RADIO - SWITCH 1197

First of all SWITCH 1197 is a station that has a teenage audience with hip hop music. I'm calling it hip hop, they probably call it something very different. I grew up in a time of  Heavy Metal, Rock, Pop, Country, Punk and the very alternative style of music called Disco.

From 2006 - 2010 I did a weekly radio show on Sunday nights with my good friend comedian Mike Shanahan. In 2009 I did my own show three days a week.

Due to work commitments I had to cease these shows with Mike for 2010.

The SHANAHAN AND STEEL SHOW was a mixture of comedy, gossip and guests with little segments which were quirky to say the least. Sometimes hit and miss the show often provided big laughs. Well sometimes.

THE AFTERNOON SHOW with MICK STEEL was very different and to be blatantly honest was not well received by the station. I created a persona of a guy who didn't really care about anything for my young audience listening at that timeslot. I received enough phone calls and emails of support to believe that I was actually connecting with this audience. I based this character on radio legend Clive Robertson. I loved the way he showed disinterest when he did the late night news.

In my show I complained about everything to do with SWITCH, the cramped room which I worked in, the pitiful food left in the fridge, the long walk to the toilets. I tried to create a world for my audience to share. That was the show and it was nothing like the Shanahan and Steel show. But I liked it and I think the small audience which I had , got the point and liked it.

I never swore on air nor did I ever say anything politically incorrect, all of my humour was dry. ( I did however get in trouble at SWITCH when I told an Irish joke, once told by the late Mike Ahern from 4BC as an obituary to him at the time he died which was a few years ago and I was upset that it was deemed racist).

We also had this Brisbane comedian of no known ability on one night and we said 'No bad language' and he said "Cunt" and Mike got him back a second time and he said "Cunt' again. As i said to Mike 'That's the last time that cunt is on the show'.
